I would love if in addition to the Subscribe feature, there was a button to Subscribe just to OP feature. For example, in following along with a labor story, I don't really want a notification each time anyone posts to that thread. I just want to be notified when the OP comes back. Just a suggestion!

@T.H.O.U.: Any ideas on what we might call this feature? It'd be best if it didn't have the word Subscribe in it (since we already use that elsewhere).

@mrbee: I don't know I guess I just thought below each post, there would be a "Subscribe to all comments" box and a "Subscribe to Original Poster only" box. I guess the functionality would both be a subscribe feature but just change the filter on it.

@T.H.O.U.: That's pretty complicated! We've learned the hard way to keep interfaces as simple as possible...
One alternative we could do is look into is adding an icon to the thread title, if the OP has responded? Kind of like how we have icons to let people know if there's a photo or poll in the thread. If we could pull that off (it would be technically challenging to do so without putting a heavy load on our server)... would that help address this?

@mrbee: maybe like a little image of a person with a check mark on them or an up arrow to show there was a post or update? I guess you would have to post it for so long and then take it down?

Hmm. This raises good questions about implementation. I'll see if my husband can read through it and make a suggestion. His job is to do just this- ask the client what functionality they want from the software he works with, and to implement it, so surely he can come up with something.

Put a little more thought into this. Rather than an icon showing the OP has updated, could you have the thread change color? It already grays out if there's been no activity since you last looked. Could you do the same but with a different color if there's been no update from the OP? So light grey for no activity at all, black for just comments but no update, and some other color or shade of grey for an update has been posted.
I still think the subscribe option would be best. I'm not sure what would be possible that's less complicated than the suggestion that's been made of having checkboxes. I think you might be selling the users a little short in thinking that that's too complicated, but you definitely have more experience with these things!

I just saw this suggestion and love it! Both the idea of having the thread have an icon (or change color like @Torchwood: suggested) when the OP has replied and you haven't checked it out yet and/or being able to subscribe to just updates from the OP!
If you did the subscribing to the OP one, you could call it "Receive Updates" or something like that.

Another name suggestion could be "Subscribe to Author" or something similar...
