Rather than an icon showing the OP has updated, could you have the thread change color? It already grays out if there's been no activity since you last looked. Could you do the same but with a different color if there's been no update from the OP? So light grey for no activity at all, black for just comments but no update, and some other color or shade of grey for an update has been posted. </p> <p>I still think the subscribe option would be best. I'm not sure what would be possible that's less complicated than the suggestion that's been made of having checkboxes.
